The joys and challenges of motherhood while being married to a physician.

Duolingo Birthday

My husband’s love for languages started when he became fluent in Spanish while serving a two year proselyting mission in Ecuador. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in French. Duolingo is a learning language app that has helped him continue practicing the languages he loves, as well as learning several new languages.

When completing lessons on the app everyday consistently, you can be on a number of days streak. My husband is currently on a 1,115 day streak. This means he has not missed a day of learning on Duolingo in over three years! Including during my labor with our son, two years of medical school, and his first year of residency. He amazes me. For his birthday my kids and I surprised him with a Duolingo birthday party at home!

My husband was turning 33 that is 12,053 days old or streak of life. A construction paper Duo holding onto balloons I hung on our chandelier.
I baked a box mix cake in two round trays. Frosted the cake with a tub of vanilla icing, saved some vanilla icing to color green for Duo’s body. Sugar was added to make the whites of his eyes, along with colored sprinkles to make the pupils, beak, and feathers. Orange coloring added for his feet. Birthday candles added later.
Lastly, I made a snack tray with foods inspired by the languages he has been studying through the Duolingo app. Arabic-hummus with naan. Greek-baklava. German-pretzel, sausage, and sauerkraut. Mandarin Chinese- sushi, egg rolls. French-quiche, berries. Spanish-jamón with sliced cheese and tomato.
